Finally a serious side project

I’ve started an interesting side project recently which is why I haven’t blogged in a couple of days. It really has been bugging me about what I’ve been wanting to do with my blog. I don’t want my blog to loose too much focus on ME as a person because again as I’ve stated before, my blog is mostly for me and my internal thought processing. So the tone of this site will stay what it is, but I’ve been wanting to do something more… something… bigger. In all the years I’ve been making websites, running websites, and building things professionally in my career, I’ve never taken the time to start a personal project of major worth for myself.

So an idea hit me and I went with it. The website is still top secret as I continue work on putting it all together and getting starting content in there, but so far here is what people are saying. Who knows if you comment on this thread, maybe I just might give you a sneak peak. Here is what people are saying so far:

A very ambitious project, for which I will be the first to pledge my support! To my knowledge, this has never been done before, and innovation is something to be commended.

Wow! That’s an excellent idea for a website. I dont think anybody has ever done anything like that before.

Screenshot Memory Lane

Published by Cybervic under HILYMI, Obsidian, World of Warcraft

All I gotta say is HOLY JEZ. I spent a long time last night getting my new personal Gallery up (link is on the left http://gallery.victorlaurence.com). The EQ screenshots blew my mind. I found a lot of other screenshots I forgot about as well, like my Horizons screenshots. I still have a TON of EverQuest screenshots to get up, but other than that my Gallery is up to speed. Also Frapps is now setup properly to record video and capture good quality PNG’s properly while in Tabula Rasa.

An interview with a gamer

An interview that Kevin Flick of Microsoft (aka Fhearl of HILYMI), conducted with me a few weeks back. He’s going to conduct a series of interviews with gamers for his blog with the sneaky and underhanded goal of helping to demonstrate that gaming is just like any other hobby we may engage in. The interview of me was the first of the series of interviews. He’s not to great with post production work, but it’s a greater interview. http://blogs.technet.com/immerse/archive/2007/10/19/gamer-interview-1-victor-f-laurence-aka-livistos-aka-soriathus.aspx

The interview itself covers my history in gaming and about half of it covers my leadership of the guild Hit it like you mean it. We really went into a lot of high level philosophical stuff in there and really put somethings I do for the guild in perspective. Sometimes I’m too humble about all the work I do.

Finding one’s purpose

Today someone told me that instead of finding one’s purpose to figure out what you need to be doing find the purpose in what you’re doing, and if you can’t find the purpose then you’re not doing the right thing. So with that in mind, I went through a little exercise…

1. Ask Yourself “Who Am I?”

I’m a creator. In everything I’ve ever done my greatest joy comes from the creation of something. Whether it’s creating music, art, code, applications, communities, guilds, I’m a creator. I love creating something that changes people’s lives, either at work or at play.

2. Ask Yourself “What Do I Love To Do?”

Code. I’m a coder. Regardless of what I’ve done I’ve always looked for a software solution to make it even better. I strive on the creation through code or in some cases implementing other people’s code.

3. Ask Yourself “What Experiences In Life Were Really Fulfilling For Me?”

A. Creating Progressive Fitness’ software B. Creating Obsidian C. Creating HILYMI. To my knowledge the software I made over 8 years ago still to this day runs the business Progressive Fitness. Having created something that is running a business and changing lives is so fulfilling. The act of creating Obsidian was a very large process of not just creating a world, but a unique concept of a world (though based on UO), scripting monsters, loot tables, balancing economies, and launching that world and watching it grow. Creating HILYMI has been a large undertaking and continues to be a struggle but every small achievement is fulfilling in it’s own way as I see the guild grow and become a more cohesive community of friends/players.

4. Ask Yourself “What Is My Purpose In Life?”

I think I’m meant to be a game developer or a developer of some piece of software that changes people’s lives. I’m destined to be part of something big, something important. I’ve never failed in creating something I put my mind to. Maybe due to elements outside of my control I created something that didn’t succeed in the end, but I’ve always followed through with something even if I didn’t have the know-how before going into the project.

5. Ask Yourself “What Am I Afraid Of?”

What does this change mean to the long term affect on my life. Am I going to have to move? How is it going to affect my social life, my family life, my overall view and plans of the future? I do always have the nagging sensation in my mind, “can I do it”, but I need to remind myself I’ve never failed at something I put my mind to. Is all of this change worth it in the end and worth the sacrifice of the changes to my life and goals?

6. Ask Yourself “Who Can I Tell?”

I can tell anyone. My life is an open book. Can I tell my boss, I kind of did today which was weird and uncomfortable, but it is what it is. I can and have told my friends and family, of whom all are supportive.

7. Ask Yourself “How Do I Put My Purpose In Place?”

I’m going to start fulfilling my destiny. I’m going to school again at one of the top 5 colleges for game programming. I’ve got connection in my guild who can give me industry contacts and I can start building a network and networking with people in the industry and getting myself known. I plan on writing some sample games showing off my skills.

Podcast #5

Published by Cybervic under Friends, Obsidian

We started recording Obsidian Podcast #5 at around 7:30 and it dragged on till 11:30. Alan aka Blinkers, Patrick aka Dunkan Kentar, Sean aka Broadband, Ashes Relandi, and myself all got on Skype to do the podcast. It was very fun an entertaining though as always a lot of work and a spider web of crazy ass tangents.

Hung-over

Published by Cybervic under Family, Friends, Health, Obsidian

Got up today around 2:30 in the afternoon with an amazingly horrible hang-over. The funny thing was I didn’t even get drunk last night. I think it’s because I was dehydrated (from being sick), then drank, and didn’t drink water like I usually do. Ended up getting over to my bro’s close to 4:00 hung out for a while and played poker with him, Carrie, and Adam. Adam sucks at poker and needs to come over and play with us more. Grabbed some coffee on the way home, did some laundry, and listening to music while dealing with Obsidian staffing issues. All around a pretty blah day. But that’s my Sundays for you. I swear one of these Sundays I need to goto Bettie Ford’s.

Looking forward to a good week ahead filled with Flash and other fun stuff. Tuesday we are meeting with IKON working on the database integration for the document management system. SQL 4 th3 w1n!

Monster Bash

Published by Cybervic under Friends, Obsidian

Today in response to seeing Obsidian back to 40 players online, I decided to hold a new kind of Monster Bash which I’ve been wanting to try for a while. Here are some screenshots from the event. I’m grateful we have some really great players in the game right now. There wasn’t a single instance of looting or PK’ing at the event, it was just a lot of people having fun and mass killing stuff. It was a great chance for me to test Sean’s new client stability code and test the stability of the new server and its internet connection. Good times.

Free Time

Published by Cybervic under Obsidian, PREM

WTF is THAT? Recently I’m not sure what it is. I’ve been getting up super early, going into work to be in camera, implementservers, and half the time am staying late somewhere between 6pm and 8pm. When I finally do get home I barely have enough time to do anything so I usually chat in Obsidian IRC, and then goto bed by 10:00. I think I’m gonna start watching Season 2 of Nip/tuck on my big screen so I can say I at least do something with my evenings on the weekday. /sigh. Well at least the good thing is my car gets to see me daily now…

Obsidian Stats Improvements

Published by Cybervic under Obsidian

Made a lot of changes today to my little ASP.NET ongoing project for Obsidian. Added a whole bunch of new features for GM’s and Admins to look around at players information as well as added a new bit of stat page showing our truly over time most dedicated players (the crazy ass veterans who’ve racked up the most total hours played). I plan on doing some more work on the Obsidian stat pages tomorrow that will start tracking client connection averages so we can see how well Obsidian grows over time.
